The TOD-9 True Tube Overdrive is unarguably the most tube-amp sounding overdrive on the market - due in no small part to the fact that is has a vacuum tube inside! Based around a Subminiature Mil-spec tube running at 30 VDC the TOD-9 uses a unique "pre-tube" circuit configuration that cascades the tube output into a solid-state distortion circuit. The result is a warm yet powerful guitar tone that is incredibly interactive with the player's performance much like a hard-working tube-amp. Featuring Drive Tone Level and Tube controls the TOD-9 allows the user to tailor the tone from a subtle overdrive boost to fully saturated sonic glory. Mechanical true bypass switching allows for clean unaltered guitar tone in bypass.

The OD9 may look just like your old favorite but that’s where the similarities end. Improved circuitry featuring the JRC4558 IC yields the ultra-smooth creamy dynamic overdrive so sought after by Guitarists. Overdrive and Output Level controls adjust the intensity of overdrive and output volume while the Hi Boost/Hi Cut Tone control adjusts the brightness from warm and smooth to sizzling hot. From subtle boosts to outrageous roars the OD9 provides the artist with the widest range of usable distinctly tube sounds available.
- Improved circuitry with a new chip yields ultra-smooth dynamic overdrive
- Drive and Level controls tweak the intensity and volume
- Hi Boost/Hi Cut tone controls adjust brightness
- True bypass switching

Best. Overdrive. Ever.
I'm a bit of an overdrive junkie; in my brief time as an electric guitarist I've played easily five or six overdrive pedals extensively and have tried out sundry others here and there. Overdrive is tricky; if the effect is too over-the-top your natural tone and attack will be obliterated and replaced with a gross muddy fog of lame distortion. If the effect's too mild it sounds like a bad amp cranked up if that.
The Maxon OD-808 is simply the best I've played.
The controls are simple: Overdrive tone balance. 'Nuff said. I was amazed by how much range I found within these though! My favorite setting is Overdrive and Tone at around 12 noon with Balance at about 2-3:00. Awesome...super creamy and responsive. I play with a Telecaster and this thing makes it sound like a dream that shakes me walls (normally considered a nightmare).
I've never played an original tube screamer but this thing is 99% the same pedal down to the chipset inside (based on the research I did). Plus at 100 bucks cheaper why not go Maxon anyway? Seriously invest in one of these. Pricier than some other overdrives but well worth the cost.
